The Gaslamp Quarter Association (GQA) is an Entertainment Destination, a National Historic District and a Business Improvement District (BID). The Official boundary is the east side of 4th Avenue, 5th Avenue and the west side of 6th Avenue, between Harbor Drive and Broadway. This 16 and one half block area was designated as a National Historic District in the 1980's. Noted as the premiere destination in Southern California for Dining, Shopping and Entertainment, this area has 150 Restaurants, Nightclubs, Lounges and Sports Bars along with another 80 shops & boutiques and 20+ hotels. There are also hundreds of professional and personal service providers within our mixed use buildings. More than 90 of these buildings have historic significance for their gorgeous Victorian architecture.
Businesses located within the Gaslamp Quarter National Historic District are automatically members of the Business Improvement District. An assessment is levied annually on Business Tax Licenses by the City of San Diego to fund the BID. The GQA represents more than 400 businesses. Businesses outside the boundary may be eligible for ASSOCIATE MEMBERSHIP.
Primary Benefits of GQA Membership:
#1 - Listing as a GQA business. The GQA uses websites, social media, printed maps and directory kiosks to define our membership to interested parties. Map & Directory listings are limited to street level merchants only, as well as locations within one adjacent block of the footprint of National Historic District.
> We request that businesses opt-in and provide us with consistent information and feedback for expanded listings and additional coverage.
#2 – Information services. GQA provides newsletters, meetings and special forums to provide your staff with key information on downtown San Diego. We also work with many critical community partners to help your staff obtain community news easily from multiple sources.
> We request you keep accurate contact information with our office to facilitate communication
#3 - Opportunity to participate in the Gaslamp Quarter Association special events, promotions and other cooperative marketing, advertising and media opportunities.
> All programming requires your opt-in. All available participation opportunities will require follow-up from your staff. Sign-up forms are usually required.
#4. Discounted Advertising Rates on Gaslamp websites, flyers and collateral materials.
> Save when you advertise with us and support your business community! Our reasonable rates reflect our non-profit status and funds invested into the GQA support the continuing improvement of the business district for your added benefit.
#5 Members may serve on GQA Committees and Board of Directors.
> Our most active business partners garner the most benefit from working with us. You are asked to choose at least one committee to have a member of your staff participate on and they should assist at least one task force per year to maximize that committee’s effectiveness. Members that participate regularly for a period of at least 6 months may become eligible for the GQA Board of Directors. Board members are the key volunteers that govern the district and choose future direction of the organization.

Businesses outside the boundary may be eligible for Associate membership. Applications are reviewed by the GQA Board of Directors once a month and must be approved by a vote. Associate Membership is designed for businesses located outside the Gaslamp Quarter boundaries that have a vested interest in business happenings within the Gaslamp. There are significant geographic restrictions on eligibility for street level businesses that rely on walk-in businesses. The GQA will not direct visitors out of the district for dining, shopping or entertainment offerings, so those types of businesses must be within one adjacent block to be approved.

The businesses of the Gaslamp Quarter are required to comply with the Municipal Code of the City of San Diego and the Planned District Ordinance (PDO) for the National Historic District. This additional set of regulations is intended to protect the integrity of the district's historic status. No one should make any changes to the exterior of historic buildings without referencing the PDO and Gaslamp Quarter Design Guidelines. Civic San Diego will assist you in defining or interpreting the code in terms of all exterior aspects: Door and window types, paint colors, signage, patio railing and lighting.
