Restaurant Spotlight: Havana 1920

Restaurant Spotlight: Havana 1920

Team GQA got a chance to celebrate the flavors of Cuba at Havana 1920!

Newly opened in the Gaslamp Quarter is Havana 1920, the latest concept from GBOD Hospitality Group. The 80-seat quaint and richly decorated restaurant channels the Hemingway-era Havana and serves classic Cuban dishes cooked by Executive Chef Anthony Porras. Havana 1920 celebrates the personal heritage of Joe Santos, COO of GBOD Hospitality Group, whose grandparents migrated from Cuba to the United States. The décor, the aroma of delicious food, and the festive music made us feel as if we had been transported to Joe Santos’ grandmother’s house, ready for an authentic Cuban meal.

What We Enjoyed:

Alex, Sherry and I were seated in their upstairs dining room decked out with vintage travel posters, 1920 Cuban cigar boxes, memorabilia and a table set with a decorative oil cloth.

  • To start, Alex, Sherry and I had a basket of crispy Mariquitas (Plantain Chips) lightly salted and with a side of Cuban Mojo Criollo and Havana Royale sauces.
  • Then, we ordered some bocaditos (bites), the Papa Rellena De Carne and the Empanada Vegetariana, that was also served with Cuban Mojo Criollo and Havana Royale sauces.
    • Papa Rellena De Carne (Picadillo Stuffed Potato) – Mashed potato fried to a golden brown and filled with seasoned ground beef and peppers.
    • Empanada Vegetariana (Vegetarian Turnover) – This crisp savory pastry was filled with portobello mushroom, spinach and cheese.
  • For an Entrée, Sherry enjoyed the Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef in Tomato), known as the national dish of Cuba, made with peppers and onions cooked in tomato sauce. The Platillo was served with black beans and rice as well as fried sweet plantains.
  • Alex had to have the classic Cuban Sandwich with slices of slow roasted pork, ham, swiss cheese, pickles, and mustard on Cuban bread served with Yuca fries and their signature sauces.
  • I had the avocado salad, complete with HUGE Carribean avocados, tomato and onion on a bed of watercress, drizzled with EVOO, kosher salt and fresh lemon juice. I also drizzled a little of the delectable mojo criollo sauce on the bed of greens too.

Havana 1920 boasts a robust bar program. Beverage Director and Lead Mixologist Ryan Andrews has curated a collection of more than 150 rums, including British Navy and hard-to-find Appleton Estate Joy. Manager Andrew Walsh gave us an amazing tour of the restaurant and taught us how to mix our own cocktails from their exquisite menu. Personally, it was fun, but I definitely have a new appreciation for the Gaslamp Quarter’s talented mixologists and bartenders! With Andrew’s guidance, I got through it, but I’m sure the mixologists of Havana 1920 would make their signature cocktails A LOT better than I did.

  • From their Bebidas menu I made the Hotel Nacional with Diplomatico 6yr. rum, fresh pineapple juice, fresh lime juice, apricot liqueur and R&D Aromatic #7 bitters.
  • Alex mixed the classic Havana 1920 Mojito. This refreshing cocktail included Havana Club anejo blanco rum, fresh lime juice, yerba buena (Cuban mint), fresh pressed sugarcane juice, sugarcane syrup, and club soda.

Insider Tips:

  • As a decorative nod to their authentic Cuban roots, the restaurant’s tables and chairs are reminiscent of your abuela’s house. All of the mismatched dining chairs were sourced by Havana 1920 staff from all across San Diego’s flea markets and vintage stores.
  • Guests of Havana 1920 can enjoy live music every evening.
  • A rare collection of vintage Bacardi Bottles, 1920 Cuban publications, photos and trinkets are beautifully displayed in creative niches around the restaurant.
  • Back by the bar, there is a wall of Cuban cigar boxes that sometimes have little fun surprises in them. Make sure you look through them and see what you can find when you visit!
  • Right below the wall of Cuban cigar boxes are couches you can lounge on and play a game of foosball.
  • Havana 1920 also has 2 wonderfully decorated domino and cigar gaming tables on the outdoor patio.
  • Authentic Cuban bread is flown in from La Segunda bakery in Florida for the restaurant’s delicious sandwiches.

From music to décor to food and drinks to service, every guest is wrapped in the spirit of Cuba. Make a reservation for lunch, dinner, or cocktails today and experience a trip to Havana in San Diego! Havana 1920 is open from 11am-1am Daily.

Lecture featuring Dr. Sheldon Lou

This Saturday Lecture will feature special guest and author Sheldon Lou, who will discuss his extensive travel in China and the dramatic changes in the Chinese economic and political landscape.

His memoir, Sparrows, Bedbugs, and Body Shadows, published by University of Hawaii, tells compelling and sometimes humorous stories about his life and lives of many workers, farmers, students, teachers, and intellectuals in China from 50s to 70s, such as the crazy sparrow eradication campaign, women raped by village officials, farmers starved to death, the fascinating story of his uncle, a devoted Buddhist educated in Germany, and more. They show how ordinary Chinese lived, eventually survived, or perished, in those turbulent years, and what physical and spiritual forces led them to perform unimaginable deeds. It is important to think what we can learn from that period of the Chinese history.

Don’t Miss the Rabbits of Rabbitville at Sparks Gallery Thursday, January 25th 6PM-9PM

Don’t Miss the Rabbits of Rabbitville at Sparks Gallery Thursday, January 25th 6PM-9PM

The Gaslamp Quarter Association and Sparks gallery, 530 Sixth Avenue, are pleased to announce a special exhibition of ten fiberglass rabbit statues and their artists on Thursday, January 25th from 6PM-9PM.  The seven-foot-tall rabbits were commissioned in May 2017 to commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Gaslamp Quarter’s original settlement. The reception will have ten of the fifteen sculptures on display, the artists who created them, refreshments, and an appearance of an exotic live rabbit from the San Diego House Rabbit Society.  Guests are encouraged to RSVP on the gallery’s website, click here or call 619-696-1416.

150 years ago, the area that is now the Gaslamp Quarter was jokingly nicknamed, “Rabbitville” after its chief inhabitants. The “Rabbitville” exhibition honors the pioneering spirit of legendary founder, Alonzo Horton, who transformed Rabbitville into modern San Diego. “It is remarkable that in only a century and a half we were able to grow into the commercial core of America’s eighth largest city,” says, Michael Trimble, Executive Director of the Gaslamp Quarter Association. “Alonzo Horton was a visionary leader who set a precedent of hard work and determination still very much alive in the Gaslamp Quarter. We have been so impressed that the “Rabbitville” exhibitions have educated and inspired the next generation of pioneers in San Diego.”

The Gaslamp Quarter Association is working in conjunction with the Downtown San Diego Partnership Clean and Safe program to make this unique public art installation possible. “Rabbitville” received its initial funding from the DSDP Clean and Safe Board of Directors whom allocate money to each Downtown neighborhood for placemaking projects. The Clean and Safe team has assisted in the installation and ongoing maintenance of “Rabbitville” as well as monitor the safety of the art throughout the program.

The Gaslamp Quarter Association is also partnering with Sparks Gallery for this event.  Sparks Gallery has not only restored the 1887 Sterling Hardware Building, but also was an integral part in submitting artists to be considered for this historic public art project.

Sponsoring a Rabbit. Each rabbit has a sponsor or patron.  Currently, nine have been generously sponsored by Coca-Cola, Ghirardelli, Hard Rock Hotel, The Pendry Hotel, Warner Bros. Television, Pacific Magazine, The San Diego Padres, District #3 Councilmember Chris Ward and John Ramirez.  The other 6 have yet to be adopted for $10,000 each. Sponsors enjoy a range of promotional benefits, including, but not limited to, recognition on a commemorative plaque and possession of the rabbit upon completion of the program at the end of May 2018. Proceeds from sponsorship will help fund new enhanced lighting in the Gaslamp Quarter. “Sponsoring a rabbit is a great way for someone who loves San Diego history to also help fund a project that will increase public safety and beautify the historic Gaslamp Quarter,” says Michael Trimble. “We are hoping to repair and replace the decorative lights throughout the district.”
