Rendezvous, nestled inside THE US GRANT hotel, is a craft cocktail experience everyone should try. Paying homage to the bar that existed there 90 years ago during Prohibition called Rendezvous, The Wonder Bar, this beautiful venue has a French theme to its design, an elegant atmosphere and a sophisticated craft cocktail menu. The romantically lit, lounge-like space is filled with sofas and communal tables along with art from the masters and local artists.

When Sherry and I sat down in the French speakeasy lounge, we were greeted by a mixologist who concocted one of the most beautiful cocktails I have ever held in my hand. We were first brought two of their most popular cocktails, the Femme Fatal and Le Coq.

• The Femme Fatal is made with Blanche Armagnac, Dijon cassis, sparkling rose and citrus. This cocktail was served in a delicate martini glass and garnished with a sparkling diamond made of ice. Yes, their mixologists are also ice artists. Ice is made at the property and formed into special shapes that complement each cocktail.
• Le Coq was served in a highball glass featuring a heady blend of French thyme and rosemary liqueurs, La Fee absinthe Parisienne, Domaine Sante “All-Sass” Riesling nectar, and crémant de Loire. The theatrics of the cocktail were stunning. Not only was the highball glass crystal but a shimmering gold ribbon was neatly tied around the glass along with a red rooster feather and gold straw garnishing the cocktail. Normally the ice in the drink is a large block with blue, white and red stripes resembling the French flag, but their ice saw had lost one of its blades when we were there, so the ice in the drink did not have the color.

The other cocktails on the menu each have a distinctive theme, look and a specialized grouping of spirits. And get this, they are only $10-12 each! The ice artistry really sets this cocktail experience aside from any other. There is even a cocktail made with gin, Lillet Blanc, and yellow chartreuse, topped with an impressionist painting in ice hovering like magic in its foam!

Rendezvous is strictly a craft cocktail bar so not a lot of food is available. However, they do serve a beautiful nibbling plate with Chartreuse jam, Riesling-absinthe nector, calvados-infused apples, brandied berries, and gourmet cheeses.

Insider Tips:

• Enjoy live music on Friday and Saturday starting at 9:30PM
• Guests who would like to share spirits can choose unique punch bowls like “The Sword of Excalibur,” presented with a sword embedded in thick ice or an Absinthe fountain.
• Along the side of the venue is a hard to miss old safe that contains very exclusive curated spirits. Guests can enjoy clear spirits like vodkas and gins, Cognacs, Aged Grain Spirits, French Sippers, Warmer Climate Spirits, Calvados, or Armagnacs. The reason these spirits are kept in a safe is because they are not cheap. The Remy Martin Louis XIII is $240 for a 1.5oz pour!

• We sipped a colorful and beautifully garnished margarita flight with three different flavors: basil peach, strawberry pomegranate, and mango habanero.
• Sherry enjoyed 3 different tacos:
  • Carne asada taco with marinated skirt steak, black garlic aioli, queso a la plancha, topped with crispy fried yams and onions, and drizzled with a lime jalapeno chimichurri on a flour tortilla
  • Blackened lime shrimp taco with tender shrimp, chipotle yogurt, shaved white cabbage, radish, cotija cheese, tomatillo salsa, red onion and cilantro served on a corn tortilla
  • Mushroom carnitas taco served with citrus braised king oyster mushrooms, fried jack cheese, cabbage, pickled red onion, and spicy aoli on a flour tortilla.
  • All were tasty and complex in their flavor profiles, but her favorite was the mushroom carnitas taco.
• I had the beet and pepita salad complete with pickled red and golden beets, jicama, arugula, queso fresco, and crunchy pepita seeds dressed perfectly with a creamy lime, cilantro guacamole vinaigrette.

Parq Restaurant, located at 615 Broadway, transformed their menu for the warmer seasons! The moment we walked into the restaurant, we noticed that the venue was brighter than when we visited during the Winter season. The roof of the restaurant was open letting in natural sunlight and trees with vibrant green leaves and lights adorned the venue. The menu also went through a transformation that reflects the Spring and Summer seasons.

GQA Staff Picks:

My friend Jordan, being a Whiskey fanatic, ordered the “Eastern Remedy,” featuring Kikori, Yzaguirre, Luxado Maraschino, Grand Marnier, and Disarrono. She said this cocktail had a strong citrus flavor and a nice bite. This is the drink for you if you like whiskey and citrus.

I (Sherry) ordered the “Looking like a Snaq-iri,” featuring Cutwater rum, strawberry Lychee, and Passoa passionfruit. This cocktail was fruity and candy-like, perfect for those like me who prefer sweeter cocktails.

From the Farm section of the menu, we ordered the Peach & Prosciutto Flatbread with goat cheese, red onion, arugula and candied walnuts on a very soft bread. This flatbread was an equal balance of sweet (candied walnuts), savory (prosciutto) and bitter (arugula).

From the Stock & Stable section, we tried the Pork Carnitas with fried green tomato and smoked onion vinaigrette. This dish was a nice mixture of textures with the soft carnitas and fried green tomatoes that are crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside.

From the Ocean section, we ordered the Grilled Octopus with romesco sauce, potato, turnip, olive, and herb salsa. The octopus was very tender, and the sauce had a spicy and sour taste to it that complimented everything very well.

From the Big Plates section, we ordered the Pan-Roasted Sea Bass with coconut green curry sauce, charred carrot, bok choy and jasmine rice. We could tell the Asian inspiration in this dish with the curry, bok choy and jasmine rice. The sea bass was very soft, and the curry sauce was slightly spicy bringing a nice kick to the dish. The bok choy was nicely cooked so that it still had a crunch. Overall this dish was flavorful, but still light.

For Dessert, we ordered the S’mores Crème Brulee. The crème brulee was a yummy chocolate flavor and the marshmallow was nicely melted for you to create your own s’more of your liking. This was a fun, sweet end to our dinner.

The dishes in the menu reflects the Spring and Summer seasons with a lighter and more vegetable forward approach. We felt that this new menu is perfect for dinner during the hot weather. Come try this new menu and see for yourself! Parq Restaurant is open for dinner every Friday and Saturday from 6:30-10PM with happy hour from 6:30-8PM.

The Smoking Gun located on the corner of 6^th and Market in the Gaslamp Quarter has just started their all you can eat Chicken Drumettes and Nugz night from 5-10pm on Thursdays! Guests of the casual “throwback” restaurant and bar can select their fare from a menu contained in a CD case with the cover looking like a Bone (s) Thugs -n-harmony album, but a play on words as Bone(s) nugz-n-harmony.  The inside of the cover lets guests choose from a variety of sauces for their braised chicken drumettes or boneless wings (nugz) each served with either tots or home-made potato thick chips.

You will not leave hungry (that’s for sure)

• Sherry and I got a chance to try a plethora of savory “nugz” and drumettes. we ordered the sweet and sour drumettes, chimichurri nugz, truffle-garlic parmesan nugz and pineapple habanero drumettes.
• My favorite was the chimichurri nugz which were perfectly seasoned with all the notes of a well developed chimichurri, and the truffle-garlic parmesan nugz.  Eating those delicious morsels kept me coming back for more.
• Sherry who likes things spicy really enjoyed the pineapple habanero drumettes. If you are into extremely spicy there is a sauce called the “Double Stinger” that is mixed with both ghost and scorpion chilis!
• Patrons can choose 1 flavor per order, and also can dip their chicken in homemade ranch sauce.

Insider Tips:

• Chicken connoisseurs can also choose from the following sauces: Buffalo, Cali Wing, BBQ Mustard, Sweet & Sour, Chimichurri, Pineapple- Habanero, Wasabi- Soy- Ginger, Maple-Sriracha, Truffle-Garlic Parmesan, Honey-Mustard, Bacon-Bleu-Chive, Cajun (dry rub) and the Double Stinger.
• Along with food and drink, guests can play pool, ping pong or boogie to the tunes.
• Each night of the week Smoking Gun has something special planned.
• Monday is Industry Night at 10PM where they serve hosted family style pasta, invite guest breweries with special beers, and give away prizes with a raffle every hour.
• Taco Tuesday- Guests can get 3 tacos for $5 and $5 mezcal & tequila shots, and $5 modelos from 4-10PM.
